Veneto accounts for nearly a tenth of Italy’s GDP and is the second region, after Lombardy, for Italian exports. Many of its numerous small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as its large industrial groups, operate in key export-oriented sectors such as food, eyewear, clothing, jewellery, shoe manufacturing, leather tanning and marble processing. Wine is also a key factor in this region: Valpolicella, Soave and Prosecco wines are well known across the world. Veneto has a strategic position, being a gate to Germany and Austria and Central/Eastern Europe. Tourism is of course not to be forgotten, with art cities such as Venice, Verona, Vicenza and Padua amongst the most visited in the country.
